Climate and soil
You are here : Home > Our vineyard > Climate and soil
Our vineyard is exposed to a special climatic phenomenon: in the evening, the cool air goes down to the plain, whereas the warm air which has formed in the day above the Reims Mountain goes down to the vines.
The Champagne vineyard is located near the northern limit for grapevine growth, thus combining a hard but tempered climate. In winter, deep and destructive frost can sometimes be observed. However, summers are rather warm and the slopes can then receive the most sunlight. Rainfall is regular throughout the year.
The vines grow on a deep chalk soil which provides good drainage of rainwater and acts as a temperature regulator by reflecting sunlight and heat.
The three grape varieties grown in Champagne, namely Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, are in perfect accordance with the climate and soil, and thus give Champagne wines their great fineness.
